What kind of watch this is
Martin Campbell directs this 130-minute action thriller, and the result feels less like a spy movie and more like a high-stakes insurance claim. Pierce Brosnan plays Bond, but Sean Bean steals the spotlight as the man who actually understands the job. The film runs long, yet it never feels like padding because every gunfight has a reason to exist. It is a dry, efficient piece of cinema that respects the audience’s intelligence. You will not find much subtlety here, which is exactly the point.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes pegs the Tomatometer at 80% as of January 2026. The average of rated reviews sits at 7.1/10, a figure from October 2021. Metacritic scores it 65/100. No specific critics are named in the provided facts, so there are no quotes to share. The numbers paint a picture of a film that was well-liked but not universally adored. A perfectly average rating is hard to argue with.
How it did with audiences
It cost $60 million and took $352 million worldwide, a gap that suggests the studio finally understood the assignment. In the United States, it pulled in $106 million, enough to make the accounting department smile without losing sleep. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. That score is a little dry, but the box office tells the real story.
