What kind of watch this is
Gifted runs 101 minutes and asks a question that sounds like a puzzle until you realize it is a trap. Frank, a single uncle raising his genius niece Mary, is not just fighting for custody; he is fighting for the right to let her be boring. The film is a drama that keeps checking its own pulse, wondering if it is about the law or the love. Marc Webb directs it with a light hand, letting the weight settle on Mckenna Grace. It is a movie about the quiet, radical act of choosing a normal Tuesday over a famous Tuesday.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports 73% positive reviews from 181 critics, with an average rating of 6.4/10 as of November 2024. The consensus notes the film isn't as bright as its protagonist, but the cast wrings engaging drama from a predictable premise. Metacritic assigns a 60/100 Metascore, indicating mixed or average reviews based on 33 critics.
Colin Covert of the Star Tribune gave it 3 out of 4 stars, calling it a simple, straightforward film where the heart is true. Owen Gleiberman of Variety praised Chris Evans, saying he exudes a homespun warmth we haven't seen in the "Captain America" films.
How it did with audiences
The budget sat at $7 million. The worldwide gross hit $43 million. That ratio suggests a quiet financial win, the kind studios pretend not to care about while counting the cash. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10.
