Get Out (2017)
Just because you're invited, doesn't mean you're welcome.
Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. What kind of watch this is
Jordan Peele’s 2017 film leans into the slow burn of a horror mystery that feels uncomfortably polite. The film runs 104 minutes, a duration that allows the dread to settle in before the trap snaps shut. It is a thriller about social performance, where every smile hides a knife and every compliment sounds like a threat. The tension comes from the realization that hospitality can be a cage. It is the kind of movie that makes you check the exits of your own house.
What the critics said
Critics treated it as a genre reset. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 98% approval as of August 2024, while Metacritic lands on 85, which it files under universal acclaim. It was the highest-rated wide release of 2017 on the former site. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called it a "jolt-a-minute horrorshow." Scott Mendelson of Forbes dubbed it a "modern American horror classic," a label that might stick. Not everyone agreed. Rex Reed of The New York Observer placed it on his list of 10 Worst Films of 2017.
How it did with audiences
It cost $4.5 million and pulled in $255.5 million worldwide, a ratio that turns a modest budget into a financial anomaly. Deadline counted it as the 10th most profitable release of 2017, a distinction that feels less like a box office victory and more like an accounting miracle. TMDB users rate it 7.6 out of 10, a steady score for a film that delighted the balance sheet. The numbers are clean; the fear was not.
What came next for the cast
Daniel Kaluuya moved from supporting turns in Sicario and Kick-Ass 2 to leading roles in Black Panther and Nope. Allison Williams traded the prestige of Girls for a string of horror films, including M3GAN and The Perfection. These shifts do not prove Get Out caused them. They just mark where the trajectories bent.
