What kind of watch this is
David Ayer directs a 135-minute war film where the tank is the only character that never leaves. Brad Pitt plays the sergeant, a man who has seen too much to care about winning, only about surviving. The crew is a mess of archetypes: the quiet kid, the loud coward, the dead-eyed driver. They are trapped in a metal box moving through a war that is already over. It is loud, dirty, and uncomfortably claustrophobic. The violence feels physical, not spectacular. It is for people who want the war to feel like a job, not a movie.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 76% as of 2024, while Metacritic lands on 64 out of 100. That is generally favorable, which is a polite way of saying the film works in bursts. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle called it a movie that makes you feel safe from the start. A. O. Scott of The New York Times saw an old-fashioned platoon picture hidden inside the gore. Not everyone agreed. Peter Debruge of Variety found the tank crew disappointingly bland. The audience, however, gave it an A−.
How it did with audiences
Fury spent $68 million to make and took in $212 million worldwide. That math works out to a comfortable profit, the kind that keeps accountants smiling without breaking a sweat. In the United States, it pulled in $86 million, a solid chunk of the total pie. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. It is a war film that did not burn the budget, just the tank.
What came next for the cast
Brad Pitt moved from fighting clubs to superhero sidekicks and a tale of Hollywood itself. Logan Lerman went from quiet teen dramas to a sitcom about solving murders. Michael Peña, already busy, just kept getting busier, hopping from boxing gyms to cosmic heists. The credits do not claim Fury altered their trajectories. They simply list what followed.
