What kind of watch this is
Terence Young directed this 1963 thriller, and he clearly wanted Istanbul to feel like a trap that closes slowly. Sean Connery plays a Bond who is less a superman and more a tired professional, which makes the danger feel real. The film runs 115 minutes, a pace that lets the tension breathe before it snaps. It is a story about a man walking into a room full of knives because he was promised a girl. The knives are the point.
What the critics said
The numbers suggest critics have settled on a consensus, even if audiences might disagree. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 97% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic assigns it an 83 out of 100. Rotten Tomatoes also lists a 7.9/10 average for rated reviews from October 2021. IMDb places the weighted average at 7.3/10 as of June 2026. The gap between the 97% and the 7.3 is the kind of statistical friction that keeps spreadsheet purists awake at night.
How it did with audiences
$2 million in. $79 million out, with $25 million of that from the United States. In film math, that is a massive win. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1. IMDb gives it a weighted average of 7.3 out of 10 as of June 2026.
