What kind of watch this is

James Foley directs this 110-minute drama about a couple who thinks they have escaped their past, only to find it waiting in the foyer. The film leans into its own absurdity, treating a blockbuster romance as a genre with its own physics. It is a movie that knows exactly what it is, which is a strange comfort.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes rates it 11% positive as of February 2025, with an average score of 3.3 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 31 out of 100, a label for generally unfavorable reviews. Guy Lodge in Variety noted that a sex-free version could be cut without losing coherence, which is a strange problem to have. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave it zero out of four stars, calling the experience sheer torture. Not everyone agreed. Manuela Lazic of IndieWire saw a disarming comedy in the ridiculous material.

How it did with audiences

It took in $372 million worldwide, a tidy sum against a $55 million production budget. In the United States and Canada, it opened with $38.6 million, the lowest start of the trilogy, yet still enough to take first place. By Valentine’s Day, it had pulled in $10.8 million, the third-highest total for a weekday holiday. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.7 out of 10. The math works, even if the sequel fatigue is real.
