What kind of watch this is

John Hughes directs a 103-minute comedy that turns a single day off into a full-blown heist on the rules of high school. Ferris fakes an illness and spends the hours outrunning a suspicious principal in a city that feels like it was built for him. The film trusts its audience to find the absurdity in how easy it is to break the system. It is a lesson in leisure, delivered with a wink.

What the critics said

Critics mostly liked it, though the numbers tell a slightly different story. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 83% as of February 2025, while Metacritic lands on 61, a score that suggests polite approval rather than rapturous joy. Roger Ebert called it "one of the most innocent movies in a long time," a description that feels almost too gentle for a film about skipping class. Steve Almond saw it as the "one film [he] would consider true art," a high bar that might make the director blush. Not everyone was charmed. Nina Darnton found the character of Sloane forgettable, a specific critique in a sea of praise. It is a film that critics still like, even if they sometimes disagree on how much.
