What kind of watch this is
David Yates directs this 142-minute fantasy adventure, where Mads Mikkelsen plays a dark wizard plotting to seize control of the magical world. Jude Law’s Dumbledore recruits Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander to stop him. The film leans into the spectacle of the series, packing two and a half hours with beast-filled battles and lore. It is a long, loud affair that prioritizes visual chaos over subtle character work. You are signing up for a big, busy ride.
What the critics said
Critics found it middling, which is a polite way of saying it didn't spark. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 46% as of March 2024, based on 248 reviews. Metacritic assigns a 47 out of 100, a figure that marks the lowest score for a Wizarding World film on the site. The consensus notes it avoids some pitfalls of its predecessor but lacks the magic that drew audiences in. Some reviews praised Mads Mikkelsen for outperforming Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, a specific win in a sea of mixed reception.
How it did with audiences
It cost $200 million and pulled in $405 million worldwide, a gap that keeps the lights on but leaves the accountants squinting. Domestic receipts landed at $96 million, while the rest of the world chipped in the difference. On TMDB, users rate it 6.6 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Jude Law moved from The Grand Budapest Hotel to a string of adventure films, including Peter Pan & Wendy. Mads Mikkelsen followed his Star Wars and Doctor Strange roles with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Ezra Miller returned to The Flash, while Eddie Redmayne starred in The Day of the Jackal. These are the projects that followed. The credits list them, but they do not prove the film caused the pivot. Sometimes a career just takes a turn, and the paperwork catches up later.
