What kind of watch this is

Director Joseph Kosinski builds a 156-minute story around a retired legend and a rookie who needs him. Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a driver dragged out of seclusion to save a failing team and teach Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, how to win without burning the place down. Javier Bardem anchors the chaos as Ruben Cervantes. The film leans on the physicality of the sport rather than exposition. It is loud, fast, and occasionally forgets to breathe. If you have ever watched a race and wondered what the driver was actually thinking in that specific second, this is your answer.

What the critics said

Critics gave F1 a 68/100 Metascore, which Metacritic labels generally favorable. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 82%, a number that feels slightly optimistic for a film with such a rigid structure. Barry Hertz of the Globe and Mail called it "recycled cinematic trash, compacted into something irresistibly bright and shiny," a description that misses the point only slightly. Others saw a film that bypasses the brain entirely. Nicholas Barber of the BBC disagreed, warning that while fans may be delighted, everyone else might not be.

How it did with audiences

The $250 million budget met a worldwide gross of $634.1 million. It opened with $146.3 million, a figure Apple likely framed as a breakthrough. That number makes F1 the studio’s first film to top the box office on opening weekend. It also became Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing movie, passing World War Z. TMDB users rate it 7.8, while IMDb sits at 7.6 as of June 2026. The numbers are impressive, but the drop after the first week tells the real story.
