What kind of watch this is

Sam Raimi directs a film that decides horror and comedy are better served by a chainsaw than a whisper. It runs 84 minutes, a tight sprint where the jump scares arrive with the predictability of a bad joke that lands anyway. The tone is campy, loud, and unapologetically silly, treating the supernatural threat as a nuisance rather than a mystery. It is not subtle. It does not try to be. The horror is there, but it wears a grin.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports an 88% Tomatometer score as of January 2026. The average user rating sits at 7.9/10 from October 2021. Metacritic assigns a 72/100 Metascore from October 2025, labeling the reception generally favorable. The consensus notes Sam Raimi transformed the horror tale into a comedy of terrors. Roger Ebert called it a fairly sophisticated satire that makes you want to get up and shuffle. Caryn James of The New York Times saw genuine, if bizarre, proof of Raimi's developing skill. Not everyone agreed. Pat Graham of Chicago Reader found the pop-up humor strained, suggesting Raimi overshot the mark.
