What kind of watch this is
Daniel Scheinert directed this 140-minute action adventure, a film that treats the multiverse less as a sci-fi concept and more as a headache. Michelle Yeoh plays Evelyn Wang, a woman who suddenly has to fight across dimensions while her daughter, Stephanie Hsu, navigates her own chaotic identity. It is loud, strange, and visually exhausting. The pacing never slows down, even when it should. It feels like trying to read a tax form while the building is on fire.
What the critics said
Critics were almost uniformly on board, which is rare for a film this loud. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 93% positive as of October 2025, with an average score of 8.5 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 81 out of 100, a score it categorizes as universal acclaim. David Ehrlich of IndieWire called it an "orgiastic work of slaphappy genius," a description that does the heavy lifting for the whole review. Not everyone bought the package. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter found the underlying theme underwhelming, a nitpick that feels almost polite given the scale of the rest.
How it did with audiences
The film spent $25 million and took in $98 million worldwide. In the United States, it earned $70 million. That is a healthy margin, though not the kind that makes accountants weep with joy. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. IMDb’s weighted average also sits at 7.7 as of February 2026. The numbers suggest the audience found the chaos manageable. Probably.
Awards
It took home 8 awards from 2 nominations. That ratio suggests the nominations were a formality. The Academy gave it Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay in 2023. It also won the Dorian Award for Film of the Year.
Where it left its mark
The film’s reputation rests on its ability to keep the emotional core intact while the plot fractures into multiverse chaos. Rolling Stone noted in 2024 that the Daniels never lose sight of the frayed emotions tying the main characters together, even as they leap between universes with absurd variations like hot dog fingers. That clarity kept the metaphysical machinations easy to follow for readers. It sits at number 49 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 150 best sci-fi films. IndieWire placed it at number 8 on its list of 50 best action movies and number 5 on its list of 62 best science fiction films of the 21st century. The New York Times ranked it number 77 on its 100 best movies of the 21st century list in 2025. The chaos never drowns out the family dinner.
