That is a long commitment, but the show earns it by focusing on the human cost of medical triage. The chaos is not just in the trauma bays; it is in the staff’s personal lives bleeding into their professional duties. It is a drama about burnout, where the hospital never sleeps and neither do the doctors trying to keep it running.
What the critics said
Critics generally loved it, with a few dry exceptions. Marvin Kitman of Newsday noted the lack of laughs, while Richard Zoglin of Time called it the most realistic medical drama on television. Eric Mink of the New York Daily News preferred the rival Chicago Hope for its storytelling, a comparison that never quite settled. TV Guide later ranked it No. 22 on its "Greatest Shows of All Time" list in 2002, placing it just behind St. Elsewhere. The Writers Guild of America also put it on its "101 Best Written TV Series" list in 2013. It’s a show that treats trauma as routine, which is exactly the point.
How it did with audiences
ER kicked off with an average of 19 million viewers per episode, slotting in as the second most watched show behind Seinfeld. It then held the number one spot in North America for the next two seasons. When Seinfeld finally ended, ER reclaimed the top rank. The series finale drew 16.4 million viewers. The peak came with "Hell and High Water," which pulled in 48 million viewers and a 45% market share. That was the highest rating for a regularly scheduled drama since a 1985 Dallas episode.
What came next for the cast
Anthony Edwards had already starred in Top Gun and Fast Times at Ridgemont High before ER. He went on to Zodiac and The Forgotten. Maura Tierney came from Law & Order, then Liar Liar and Insomnia. Noah Wyle stepped in after A Few Good Men, moving to Donnie Darko and Falling Skies. Laura Innes, known for The Fury, later appeared in Deep Impact and Silo. The credits list what came next. They do not prove the series caused it.
