What kind of watch this is
Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy is a 91-minute thriller where a college professor uncovers an actor who shares his face. The tagline says you can’t escape yourself, which is a dry way of describing a man trying to stalk his own reflection. Villeneuve builds the dread slowly, letting the mystery tighten until the finale feels less like a plot twist and more like a realization that the audience has been staring at the wrong man all along. It is a quiet, unsettling watch for anyone who finds their own doppelgänger less comforting than a horror movie.
What the critics said
The reception is comfortable but not euphoric. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 72% Tomatometer score as of November 2024, based on 121 reviews. The average rating among those who voted is 6.6 out of 10. Metacritic is more restrained, landing on a 61 Metascore from 30 reviews, which falls into the generally favorable category.
The consensus praises Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance and Denis Villeneuve’s direction. A. O. Scott of The New York Times called the style "alluring and lurid." Not everyone agreed on the pacing. Richard Corliss of Time found the 90-minute runtime nearly an hour too long.
What came next for the cast
Jake Gyllenhaal stepped from Donnie Darko (2001) and Prisoners (2013) into Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Nocturnal Animals (2016), and Life (2017). Mélanie Laurent moved from Inglourious Basterds (2009) and Now You See Me (2013) to 6 Underground (2019), Murder Mystery 2 (2023), and Oxygen (2021). Isabella Rossellini transitioned from Blue Velvet (1986) and Death Becomes Her (1992) to Joy (2015), Conclave (2024), and Spaceman (2024). Sarah Gadon shifted from A Dangerous Method (2011) and Dream House (2011) to 11.22.63 (2016), Ferrari (2023), and The Death & Life of John F. Donovan (2019). The timeline offers no causal link. It simply marks where each path bent.
