Byron Howard directs this 102-minute animated fantasy about a Colombian family where magic blesses every child except Mirabel. The hook is simple: the one ordinary person in an extraordinary house becomes the only one who can save it. It runs on the tension between a vibrant, charmed town and the quiet dread that the magic is cracking. The tagline promises a little magic in almost all of us, which is a polite way of saying one person is left out. It is a film about being the only normal one in a room full of miracles.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 92% with an average of 7.5 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 75, a score it labels generally favorable. Critics mostly agreed the visuals were dazzling. Robbie Collin called the animation "dazzling in all sorts of ways". Not everyone loved the soundtrack. Kyle Smith found the songs "thuddingly mediocre".
How it did with audiences
Encanto cost $150 million and took in $255 million worldwide. It needed $300 million to break even, so the math stayed red for a while. Audiences rated it 7.6 on TMDB and 7.2 on IMDb as of February 2026. The film found its life in the holidays, then on Disney+. The spreadsheet never caught up to the sing-alongs.
What came next for the cast
Stephanie Beatriz entered with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Short Term 12. She left with Twisted Metal. John Leguizamo arrived after John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2. He departed with The Menu, Violent Night, and The Odyssey. The credits cannot say the magic caused that shift. They can only list what came next.
