Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Christine Brown has a good job, a great boyfriend, and a bright future. But in three days, she's going to hell.
After denying a woman the extension she needs to keep her home, loan officer Christine Brown sees her once-promising life take a startling turn for the worse. Christine is convinced she's been cursed by a Gypsy, but her boyfriend is skeptical. Her only hope seems to lie in a psychic who claims he can help her lift the curse and keep her soul from being dragged straight to hell.

What kind of watch this is
Sam Raimi returns to horror with a film that treats a mortgage denial as a genuine existential threat. Christine Brown is a loan officer who makes one bad call, and the consequences arrive with bureaucratic precision. The curse is not a vague spiritual weight; it is a countdown. Three days. Her boyfriend thinks it is a mental breakdown. The psychic thinks it is a soul contract. The tension comes from watching a modern, corporate life slowly fracture under the pressure of an ancient, specific punishment. It is a tight 99-minute clock ticking toward a very literal bottom.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed that Sam Raimi was back in top form. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 92% approval rating as of October 2024, alongside a 7.6/10 average from rated reviews. Metacritic’s weighted score sits at 83 out of 100, a figure that signals universal acclaim. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly called it "the most crazy, fun, and terrifying horror movie in years." Not everyone bought the magic. Rex Reed found the plot unbelievable, while Peter Howell of The Toronto Star thought it "just not very funny.
How it did with audiences
The film opened at #4 with $15.8 million. That two-week start was described as disappointing. It dropped 56% the next weekend. Yet the numbers kept moving. By August, the domestic gross hit $42.1 million. Add $48.7 million from overseas, and the total reaches $90.8 million worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5.
What came next for the cast
Alison Lohman went from Big Fish and Matchstick Men to The Vatican Tapes. Justin Long traded DodgeBall for Weapons and Barbarian. Lorna Raver moved from Freeway to The Caller. The credits list the sequence, not the cause. Careers are not a straight line. Sometimes they are a long hallway with doors that open onto very different rooms.
