What kind of watch this is
Dexter is a 2006 crime drama that runs 8 seasons and 96 episodes. That is 96 hours of a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department working a double life. By day, he analyzes crime scenes. By night, he hunts the criminals who slipped through the justice system. Michael C. Hall plays a man whose job requires him to be meticulous, a trait that also makes him a very efficient serial killer. The tension comes from the fact that he is not hiding from the police; he is employed by them. You are watching a professional do his job, except the job involves murder. It is a long watch, but the premise is tight enough to hold the attention.
What the critics said
Critics generally liked Dexter, though the enthusiasm dipped as the years stacked up. Metacritic scored season one 77, placing it as the third-best reviewed show of the 2006 fall season. Rotten Tomatoes gave that same season an 83% approval rating. Season two climbed higher, hitting 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 85 on Metacritic, before the ratings slowly eroded. By season six, the Metacritic score fell to 62, and the reviews turned mixed. Tad Friend of The New Yorker noted that when Dexter struggles to connect, "the show finds its voice." That voice got quieter by the end, but the core appeal held firm for most of the run.
How it did with audiences
Dexter ran on cable, so there is no box office figure to dissect. The money tracking simply ends at the screen. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10. That number captures a specific kind of commitment. Viewers stayed for the blood. They stayed because the ending rewrote the beginning.
What came next for the cast
Michael C. Hall moved from a funeral home drama to a murder mystery reboot a decade later. Jennifer Carpenter shifted from a horror film to a prison brawl. James Remar went from a medical soap to a Quentin Tarantino epic. These credits do not prove Dexter caused the pivot. They simply mark the turning point. The timeline does the work.
