Kenneth Branagh directs and stars, keeping the pacing brisk enough that the steam doesn’t have time to settle. It is a film about how much prettiness can hide before it snaps.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 62% as of November 2022. Metacritic lands on 52 out of 100, a score that signals mixed or average reception. The consensus is polite but cautious. Critics see a solidly entertaining film enlivened by its cast, yet nagged by its old-fashioned nature. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter noted Branagh drained some of the fun out of it. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called it a moderately diverting dessert. It never transcends the feeling of a relic injected with life serum, which is part of its minor-league charm.
How it did with audiences
The $90 million budget met $137 million in worldwide gross, a result that clears the studio’s hurdles while barely clearing the break-even line. In the United States, it took in $46 million, opening at number one despite a projected range of $11 to 17 million. Audiences skewed older, with 77% above 25. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. The numbers suggest people went, saw the boat, and walked away with mixed feelings.
