What kind of watch this is
Zack Snyder’s 2004 film is 101 minutes of high-contrast survival. It takes the original’s slow-burn paranoia and swaps it for a hyper-stylized, kinetic frenzy. The hook is the setting: a shopping mall, which is arguably the most logical place to be trapped when the world ends. It is a film that treats consumerism as the final boss. The tone is violent, loud, and unapologetically cool. It is less about the horror of death and more about the aesthetic of destruction.
What the critics said
The reception was lukewarm, a temperature that suits a zombie movie. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 76% Tomatometer score and a 6.8 average of rated reviews as of May 2022. Metacritic, slightly cooler, sits at 59 as of November 2025. The numbers suggest the film did its job without setting the world on fire. It is a film that survives on momentum, which is exactly what the zombies need.
How it did with audiences
Entertainment Weekly predicted a $22 million opening, but the film pulled in $27.3 million, dethroning The Passion of the Christ from the top spot. It finished its theatrical run with $102 million worldwide against a $26 million budget. That is a solid return, even if it was released just before another zombie movie from the same studio. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10.
