Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an animated crime drama set in a city where the body is a product and the government is a competitor. David Martinez starts as a student and ends up as a mercenary, driven by a personal loss that makes him reckless. The series runs 20 episodes across two seasons, totaling roughly 9 hours of viewing. It is not a slow burn. The pacing is frantic, the violence is graphic, and the stakes are personal rather than political. The animation style is loud and unapologetic, mirroring the chaos of Night City. It asks how much of yourself you will sell to feel alive.
What the critics said
Critics did not merely like it; they worshipped it. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 100% Tomatometer score based on 16 reviews as of November 2024, an average of 8.8 out of 10. The consensus calls it an exceptionally stylish adaptation. Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut noted that in many ways, this is the Cyberpunk story the game wanted to tell and couldn't. Matt Kim of IGN called it a wild ride, worth every blistering second. Even Hideo Kojima weighed in, comparing the world design favorably to a 1990 OVA. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, however, found the ten-episode length rushed, particularly the finale. A perfect score with a caveat about pacing.
