What kind of watch this is

Ang Lee directs a 2000 action romance that feels less like a fight scene and more like a dance among the branches of a tree. The hook is the sword, which has been stolen, and the quiet tension of two warriors who have spent their lives avoiding each other's feelings. It runs 120 minutes, a precise amount of time to watch people jump across rooftops with the gravity of thought. It is a film about restraint, where the most violent act is often the decision not to strike.

What the critics said

Critics generally agreed this was a triumph. Rotten Tomatoes assigns a 97% approval rating as of November 2022. Metacritic, which bases its 94/100 Metascore on 32 reviews as of June 2025, labels the response "universal acclaim". It was widely acclaimed in the West. Some Chinese-speaking viewers noted the distinct regional accents of the cast. Michelle Yeoh responded to the complaint, stating that her character lived outside of Beijing.

How it did with audiences

It cost $15 million and took $214 million worldwide, a ratio that film accountants call a triumph and other accountants call a miracle. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. IMDb auditors gave it a weighted average of 7.9/10 as of March 2026. It opened in limited release, climbed to sixth, and eventually became the first foreign-language film to break the $100 million mark in North America. The math was not hard; the audience just did it first.

Awards

It collected 7 wins from 11 nominations, including the 2001 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. That Oscar joined the Golden Horse, Hong Kong Film, and Hugo awards. The film also picked up the Golden Globe and Saturn honors. Ten Academy nominations was a record for non-English language films, until later titles matched or broke it.

What came next for the cast

Michelle Yeoh moved from a James Bond film to Everything Everywhere All at Once, a leap that feels less like a career arc and more like a plot twist. Chang Chen traded indie arthouse for Dune, trading intimacy for scale. Chow Yun-Fat went from The Killer to Dragonball Evolution, a turn that is best described as bold rather than wise. The credits list what came next; they cannot prove this film caused it.
