What kind of watch this is
Creed III is a 2023 drama where the protagonist steps into the director’s chair. Michael B. Jordan directs a 116-minute film about a champion who must fight a former friend, Damian Anderson, played by Jonathan Majors. The hook is simple: one man has everything to lose, the other has nothing. It leans on the weight of that history rather than just the physical bout. Tessa Thompson anchors the domestic stakes alongside the ring drama. It is a film that trusts you to care about the people before you care about the punches.
What the critics said
Critics largely approved, though the numbers tell a story of comfortable consensus rather than shock. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 89% approval rating from 341 reviews, with an average score of 7.1/10. Metacritic assigns it 73 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reception. The consensus leans on Michael B. Jordan’s direction and Jonathan Majors’ turn as the villain. Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter called it a "rousing success" and a "slick, cool" narrative. It is a solid entry in the franchise, proving that stepping out of Rocky’s shadow is possible, provided you bring enough punch to the table.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $75 million. The worldwide gross hit $276.1 million. It opened at No. 1 and stayed in the domestic Top 10 for six straight weeks. Audiences did not need a spreadsheet to see the math. They just bought the tickets.
What came next for the cast
Michael B. Jordan had Black Panther (2018) behind him, followed by Sinners (2025). Tessa Thompson traded Avengers: Endgame (2019) for HIS & HERS (2026). Phylicia Rashād stepped away from Creed II (2018) to take on The Beekeeper (2024). The credits show what came next. They do not prove causation.
