What kind of watch this is
Tim Burton’s 2005 film runs 77 minutes, a tight window for a story about a man who accidentally marries a dead woman. The tone is gothic, but the heart is surprisingly tender. Metacritic sits at 83, which their scale translates to universal acclaim. Justin Chang of Variety called it "an endearingly schizoid Frankenstein of a movie." That is a compliment with a pulse. Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times praised the "breadth of imagination," noting a world we are loathe to leave. The consensus is that the visuals do the heavy lifting, which is fair, given how much the bones are doing the talking.
How it did with audiences
Corpse Bride cost $40 million to make and took in $118 million worldwide. That is a comfortable margin for a studio, though perhaps less so for the living who got to keep the credits. It pulled in $53 million in the United States and $64.7 million elsewhere, with France, the United Kingdom, and Japan doing the heavy lifting outside North America. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. Audiences clearly preferred the dead to the living, at least in the box office.
What came next for the cast
Before 2005, Depp was carving out his pirate era and Bonham Carter was finding her footing in live-action dramas. After the stop-motion wedding, Depp leaned into Jack Sparrow’s sequels, while Bonham Carter settled into the Hogwarts faculty. The credits list these shifts, but they do not prove the corpse bride caused them. It is a coincidence of scheduling, not a causal chain.
