What kind of watch this is
Henry Selick directs a 100-minute film. The hook is simple: a door leads to a better version of your life, provided you can pay the price. That price is not metaphorical. It is physical, specific, and terrifyingly real. The film plays with the idea that perfection is just a trap with nice lighting. It is not a gentle bedtime story, despite the genre labels.
What the critics said
Critics treated the film with respect, if not total enthusiasm. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91% as of August 2024, with an average reviewer score of 8/10. Metacritic lands on 80 out of 100, a rating it files under generally favorable. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it "a beautiful film about several nasty people." David Edelstein of New York magazine wanted a "touch more ... story." It is a strange, quiet classic.
How it did with audiences
It cost $60 million and took in $125 million worldwide, a margin that keeps the studio quiet but the investors happy. TMDB users rate it 7.9 out of 10. The numbers suggest the little door in the hallway was worth the climb.
What came next for the cast
Dakota Fanning swapped child-star roles for a string of late-2010s credits. Teri Hatcher moved from James Bond and Spy Kids into a superhero TV series. Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French both popped up in Death on the Nile more than a decade later. The timeline does not prove Coraline reshaped these paths. It just marks the point where their next chapters began.
