What kind of watch this is
Soderbergh shoots Contagion like a documentary, keeping the camera at arm's length. It is 106 minutes of dry, procedural panic, where the virus kills in days but the fear moves faster. The hook is the silence between the screams. You are left to fill in the emotional gaps with your own dread. It feels less like a movie and more like a bad news cycle you cannot turn off.
What the critics said
Critics found it sharp, if a bit cold. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 85% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, with a 7.1/10 average. Metacritic sits at 70, which it labels "generally favorable." David Denby of The New Yorker called it "brilliant" and "emotionally enveloping." Christopher Orr of The Atlantic preferred it messier, finding the "clinical" tone too detached. The consensus praises the tight plotting and ensemble cast. It is a disaster movie that trusts your intelligence, which is a high bar to clear.
How it did with audiences
It cost $60 million and took $135 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. That is a solid score for a movie about everyone getting sick, though perhaps not for the experience of watching it.
