What kind of watch this is

Francis Lawrence directs Keanu Reeves as a man who has literally been to Hell and back. The film is 121 minutes of noir-lite, where the supernatural is just another layer of urban decay. Reeves plays the role with the specific exhaustion of someone who has stopped being surprised by anything. It is not a scary movie. It is a movie about a guy who is too tired to be afraid, which is arguably scarier.

What the critics said

The critical reception is lukewarm at best. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 46% Tomatometer score based on 227 reviews as of August 2024, with an average rating of 5.5/10. Metacritic assigns it a 50/100 Metascore from 41 critics, a number that sits squarely in the mixed territory. Richard Corliss of Time magazine described the film as "a one-of-a-kind hybrid: a theological noir action film," though he found the climax "irrevocably goofy." Dissent is plentiful; Desson Thomson of The Washington Post argued that the relation between the movie and its source material is, at best, superfluous.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $100 million. It took in $231 million worldwide, a margin that film accountants call a win and everyone else calls a Tuesday. In North America, it earned $76 million. The numbers are solid, if not spectacular. TMDB users rate it 7.2 out of 10.
