What kind of watch this is

Conclave is a 120-minute drama-thriller directed by Edward Berger. It traps a small group of cardinals in a room to pick a new Pope. The tension comes from the walls. Ralph Fiennes plays Lawrence, the man who has to keep the ritual running while the conspiracy tightens around him. Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow add weight to the silence. It is a film about power conducted in whispers.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 93% Tomatometer score as of October 2025, while Metacritic lands on a 79 Metascore, a tier it defines as generally favorable. Critics generally agreed on the staging and the cast, specifically Ralph Fiennes. The consensus on the plot was less unified. Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times found the mystery "pretty thin and silly." Peter Debruge of Variety, conversely, called the final twist "one of the most satisfying twists in years." It is rare for a film to be accused of being both too deep and not deep enough in the same breath.

How it did with audiences

Conclave cost $20 million and grossed $128 million worldwide, with North America contributing $32.5 million to the total. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $15 million after ancillaries. It debuted to $6.6 million, finishing third. The audience skewed significantly older, with 77% over 35 and 44% over 55. TMDB users rate it 7.2. The demographics suggest a film that found its specific readers in the lobby, not the general crowd.

What came next for the cast

Ralph Fiennes moved from the wizarding world of Harry Potter to the post-apocalyptic decay of the 28 Years Later films. Stanley Tucci stepped away from superhero blockbusters like Captain America and The Hunger Games toward The Electric State and Fountain of Youth. The credits do not say Conclave changed their trajectories. They just show what followed.
