The show appears on numerous "greatest of all time" lists, including Variety’s 2023 ranking. It is a sitcom that knows exactly how much it knows.
How it did with audiences
The pilot aired on September 17, 2009, pulling in 7.680 million viewers. It captured 93% of the 18–49 demographic from The Office, which was in the prior slot. NBC called it the "bright spot for the night," a distinction it earned while The Office dropped 18% and Parks and Recreation fell 30%. The show later struggled in live ratings despite critical acclaim, though DVR numbers tended to improve. On TMDB, users rate it 8 out of 10. Ambition often keeps a sitcom from finding its mass audience.
