What kind of watch this is

Michael Mann directs Collateral as a 120-minute containment study. Tom Cruise plays Vincent, a man who turns a city into a killing floor while Jamie Foxx plays Max, the cab driver who realizes the fare is a threat. The film is not about the chase; it is about the silence inside the car. Cruise moves with a terrifying precision, treating murder as a logistical task. Foxx stays grounded, reacting to the chaos with the weary patience of a man who has seen too much. It is a movie about how easily order collapses when one person decides to break the rules. The tension comes from the fact that Max cannot leave, and Vincent will not stop.

What the critics said

Critics leaned positive, though not uniformly. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 86% approval rating based on 238 reviews as of January 2026. Metacritic sits at 71, a generally favorable mark. Stephen Hunter of The Washington Post called it "the best kind of genre filmmaking." Roger Ebert gave it three-and-a-half stars, noting the dialogue elevated the material. Not everyone agreed. David Edelstein of Slate found the film "too bad that halfway through... [it] turns into a series of loud, chaotic, over-the-top action set pieces." The style got credit; the substance got questioned.

How it did with audiences

The film spent $65 million to make and pulled in $218 million worldwide. That’s a solid return, the kind that keeps studio heads smiling while ignoring the creative risks taken to get there. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. Viewers apparently enjoyed the ride, even if the studio was busy counting the cash.

Awards

Collateral collected 8 awards from 33 nominations. Jamie Foxx took the National Society of Film Critics Best Actor prize and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Best Supporting Actor award. Michael Mann was named Best Director by the National Board of Review. The film also made that board’s top 10 list. The rest of the hardware went to the edit, sound, and Foxx’s other performance turns.

What came next for the cast

Mark Ruffalo moved from Windtalkers to The Avengers. That is a significant shift in genre and scale. Jamie Foxx transitioned from Any Given Sunday to Django Unchained, while Tom Cruise continued his long run of action leads. Jada Pinkett Smith returned to the Matrix franchise years later. The credits cannot say Collateral caused any of these specific career turns. They simply mark the point where these paths diverged.
