Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other. Emboldened by her success, she decides to give hopelessly klutzy new student Tai a makeover. When Tai becomes more popular than she is, Cher realizes that her disapproving ex-stepbrother was right about how misguided she was -- and falls for him.

Critics called it a funny, clever reshaping of Emma. The consensus pokes fun at teen films and Beverly Hills glitterati with equal ease. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 81% as of November 2024. Metacritic lands on 73, a number that signals generally favorable reviews. It is not a perfect film, but it is a bright one.
Janet Maslin of The New York Times found it eye-catching and cheery, even if it runs out of gas. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called it wicked good fun, noting the materialism is scary but the star is a winner.
