What kind of watch this is
Alex Garland directs a 109-minute war drama where the enemy is the event itself. The film follows a press team chasing a headline through a collapsing nation, treating the conflict less as a battle to win and more as a story to document. It is a tense, grounded look at the cost of witnessing history, stripped of heroic tropes. The camera stays close, letting the chaos do the talking. It is a sober reminder that the news cycle is often the only thing left when the rules stop applying.
What the critics said
Critics found the film tough and unsettling by design. Rotten Tomatoes lists an 81% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, while Metacritic assigns a 75 Metascore, indicating generally favorable reviews. Peter Debruge of Variety called it a powerful vision that leaves us shaken. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com described it as furiously convincing and disturbing. Some reviewers felt it was coldly incurious about its victims, though the script still felt poetically true. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B-".
How it did with audiences
The $50 million gamble paid off. Civil War pulled in $68.7 million in North America and $58.5 million elsewhere, landing a $127.3 million worldwide total. It held the top spot for its first two weekends, a notable feat for an R-rated independent. On TMDB, users have given it a 6.8 out of 10. For a studio known for smaller hits, this was a loud one.
