What kind of watch this is

Alfonso Cuarón directs a 109-minute science fiction thriller that treats a sterile future like a war zone. The world has stopped making babies, and the film plays out the chaos of that silence. It is not a polite story about hope; it is a dirty, loud journey where every step forward costs blood. The camera never lets you settle, treating the protagonist’s exhaustion as the real antagonist. It asks what a man does when the only thing worth saving is a child who has not been born yet.

What the critics said

Critics agreed on the impact. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 92% approval rating based on 252 reviews as of August 2024. Metacritic assigns a 84/100 Metascore from 38 reviews, a tier it labels universal acclaim. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded four stars, noting the cities look "just like today, except tired and shabby." Dana Stevens of Slate called the film "the herald of another blessed event." Jonathan Romney of The Independent found some futuristic scenes "run-of-the-mill future fantasy," a dissent that barely dented the consensus. The film topped best-of-2006 lists from The A.V. Club and The Washington Post.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $76 million, and the worldwide take came in at $71 million. In Hollywood, that is a loss. In every other industry, it is a respectable performance. The United States alone contributed $36 million to that total. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. IMDb, using a weighted average, sits at 7.9 out of 10 as of March 2026. The numbers suggest the audience liked it enough to forgive the accounting.
