What kind of watch this is

Cars 2 is a 2011 animated adventure where Lightning McQueen races in the World Grand Prix while his tow truck buddy, Mater, gets recruited into international espionage. Directed by John Lasseter, the film runs 106 minutes. It splits its time between high-speed racing and a spy thriller subplot that leans heavily on Michael Caine’s voice as the agent Finn McMissile. It is a movie that asks you to care about a truck’s secret life, which is a bold request for a film aimed at families.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 40%, the lowest for any Pixar film on the site. Metacritic is slightly kinder at 57. The consensus calls the visuals dazzling but the storytelling rusty. It is the only Pixar entry to earn a "rotten" certification. Critics liked the look, not the script. Joe Morgenstern called it "seldom gets beyond mediocrity." Peter Travers disagreed, seeing a "beating heart under its hood.

How it did with audiences

It cost $200 million and made $560 million worldwide. In the United States, that total was $191 million. The remaining $370.7 million came from other countries. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.2 out of 10. That is a solid score for a sequel that tried to be a spy thriller.

What came next for the cast

Owen Wilson moved from Armageddon and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian to The Grand Budapest Hotel, Loki, and Wonder. Michael Caine moved from Inception and The Dark Knight to Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. Emily Mortimer moved from Shutter Island and Notting Hill to Mary Poppins Returns, Spectral, and Relic. The credits do not suggest Cars 2 redirected any of these paths. It just sits in the middle, a brief pause before the next big thing.
