In Bruce we trust?

Bruce Nolan toils as a "human interest" television reporter in Buffalo, NY, but despite his high ratings and the love of his beautiful girlfriend, Bruce remains unfulfilled. What kind of watch this is

Tom Shadyac directs this 2003 fantasy comedy, pairing Jim Carrey’s manic energy with Morgan Freeman’s calm authority. The film runs 101 minutes, a duration that feels surprisingly tight for the amount of chaos on screen. Carrey plays Bruce Nolan, a reporter whose bad day leads to a divine power swap, while Freeman delivers God with the dry restraint of a man who has seen it all. Jennifer Aniston anchors the romance as Grace Connelly. It is a loud movie that relies on the contrast between its two leads. The tagline asks, "In Bruce we trust?" The answer depends entirely on whether you enjoy a man with infinite power and zero patience.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes holds a 48% approval rating based on 191 reviews, while Metacritic sits at 46 out of 100, a score that signals mixed or average reception. The consensus notes Jim Carrey is hilarious in slapstick scenes, though the film gets bogged down in treacle. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it a charmer, praising the performance of Jennifer Aniston. Not everyone was charmed. Robert Koehler of Variety found remarkably little done with the premise, adding another file to the cabinet of under-realized comedies.

How it did with audiences

The $81 million budget came back as $485 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2003. Its opening weekend of $67.9 million set a record for Jim Carrey films at the time, a mark that stood until 2022. It is Aniston and Carrey's highest-grossing film worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Jim Carrey moved from The Truman Show to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That is a pivot, not a straight line. Morgan Freeman took on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He had already done Se7en, so the range was there. Jennifer Aniston went from Friends to Just Go with It. The credits list what happened. They do not explain why.
