What kind of watch this is
Larry Charles directs this 84-minute comedy, but the engine is Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat, a Kazakh journalist who travels to America to make a documentary. The hook is the collision: Borat asks absurd questions, and the people he meets answer with total sincerity. The film runs short because the shock wears off if you keep it going. It works because the camera stays on the other person, letting their reactions do the heavy lifting. The humor comes from the gap between Borat’s ignorance and their willingness to explain the world to him. It is a test of patience, and of nerve.
What the critics said
Critics loved the chaos. Rotten Tomatoes holds a 91% Tomatometer score as of February 2024, while Metacritic sits at 89 out of 100. That is "universal acclaim," in Metacritic’s polite vocabulary. Ty Burr of The Boston Globe called the film "silliness at its most trenchant." He also named it the funniest film of the year, a bold claim for a movie about a fake journalist. Most reviewers agreed that the offense was the point. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone simply said, "High-five!" One voice dissented. Joe Queenan called Sacha Baron Cohen an "odious twit." The rest of the industry did not seem to mind.
How it did with audiences
The film took in $129 million in the United States and $263 million worldwide. It opened at No. 1, a feat that required some serious arithmetic to pull off on just 837 screens. Audiences rated it 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb as of March 2026. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. The numbers suggest people liked it enough to come back, which is rarer than a perfect score.
What came next for the cast
Sacha Baron Cohen moved from Ali G Indahouse to Hugo and The Dictator. Ken Davitian traded S.W.A.T. and Holes for Get Smart and The Artist. Luenell went from The Rock to A Star Is Born and Coming 2 America. Alex Daniels shifted from Batman & Robin to Fatale. The credits list these shifts. They do not prove the film caused them. It just happened to be there when the next phone call came in.
