What kind of watch this is

Blade runs 121 minutes and splits the difference between a vampire movie and a gadget showcase. Stephen Norrington directs it like a heist film where the loot is blood. Wesley Snipes plays the half-vampire with the weary confidence of a man who has been hunted by people who age in reverse. The horror elements serve the action, not the other way around. When the vampires come for him, he is already armed. It is a film that knows exactly what it is: a stylish fight with teeth.

What the critics said

The critics were divided, which is the honest way to describe a score of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic lands lower, at 47, signaling mixed or average reception. Roger Ebert praised the visual style, calling it a film that "relishes high visual style." James Berardinelli agreed it could dazzle, but warned it would "leave many viewers dissatisfied." The consensus notes the action is fierce, even if the plot feels thin. It’s a movie that hits hard visually but struggles to hold the story together.

How it did with audiences

Blade cost $45 million and took in $131 million worldwide, a margin that satisfies accountants but leaves the studio feeling shortchanged. In the US, it pulled $70 million. It knocked Saving Private Ryan off the top spot, holding number one for two weekends before There's Something About Mary took over. On TMDB, users give it a 6.9.

What came next for the cast

Wesley Snipes moved from Demolition Man to Deadpool & Wolverine, a span that defies simple chronology. Stephen Dorff shifted from Judgment Night to Zoolander, a pivot no one predicted. Kris Kristofferson, already a veteran from Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, kept appearing in sequels. The timeline is messy. Careers drift.

Where it left its mark

Weiss and Kauer's vampire hunter left a footprint that refused to fade. In August 2014, Snipes spoke about his desire to return, noting there were stones left unturned and latitude to build on. That desire preceded Marvel's 2019 announcement of a reboot starring Mahershala Ali, a move Snipes publicly supported. The character eventually crossed over into the MCU in 2024, appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine. A 2021 Marvel one-shot by Daniel Kibblesmith even explored an alternate ending where Frost succeeds. The franchise outlived its original run, proving the suit still fits.
