What kind of watch this is
Bird Box is a 2018 horror-thriller where the threat is something you cannot see. It runs 124 minutes, a duration that feels longer when your eyes are shut. Susanne Bier directs Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, and John Malkovich through a world where looking is the fatal mistake. It is a strange, suffocating experience that turns the most basic human sense into a trap.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 64% as of October 2024, with a critic average of 5.9/10. The consensus says the strong acting compensates for a film that never quite reaches its intriguing potential. Metacritic lands on 51, which it files under mixed or average. It is a movie that knows what it is. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com called the climax "just silly when it needs to be tense." The screenplay, he noted, writes itself into a corner. Sarah Aswell of Forbes saw moments of true fright tangled with the corniness that many horror movies can't shake.
How it did with audiences
Netflix claimed 45 million viewers in the first week, a figure analysts questioned for lacking independent verification. Nielsen counted 26 million US viewers in that same span. By the end of four weeks, Netflix reported 89 million households, placing it second only to another original. A Barclays study estimated a traditional release would have earned $98 million worldwide. It topped Netflix’s most-watched list with 282.02 million hours before Red Notice took the spot in 2021. TMDB users give it a 6.8.
What came next for the cast
Sandra Bullock returned to blockbusters with Bullet Train and The Lost City, while John Malkovich traded Transformers for Velvet Buzzsaw. Sarah Paulson kept her horror streak alive with Ratched and Run. Trevante Rhodes moved from Moonlight to The United States vs. Billie Holiday. These trajectories did not hinge on one film. They just happened to cross paths in a dark room.
