What kind of watch this is

Tim Burton’s 2003 film is a 125-minute blend of adventure, fantasy, and drama that leans hard into the mythic. It does not ask you to believe every story, only to believe in the storyteller. The hook is the distance between the man in the hospital bed and the giant in the woods. Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor share the same soul, separated by time and skepticism. Billy Crudup sits in the middle, tired of the lies but starving for the truth. It is a film that treats exaggeration as a form of love.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 75% as of August 2024, with a 7.1/10 average from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 58, a score it files under mixed or average. The consensus calls it a charming father-and-son tale. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly saw a wide-eyed Southern Gothic picaresque. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised the art of storytelling. Not everyone bought the magic. Roger Ebert noted that at a certain point, the stories stop working as entertainment and segue into sadism.
