What kind of watch this is
Beauty in Black pairs a stripper trapped by a violent pimp with a hair care executive stuck in a loveless marriage. Created by Tyler Perry, the drama runs 32 hours across 3 seasons and 40 episodes. That is a substantial block of time to spend watching two women navigate separate hells that eventually collide. The hook is simple: trust no one. If you can stomach the high stakes and the slow burn, the payoff is watching two people who have nothing in common realize they are fighting the same war.
What the critics said
Critics were not kind. The Guardian’s Andrew Lawrence gave it one star, calling it "a disaster with one-dimensional characters and haphazard plotting." The Decider’s Joel Keller agreed on the tone, describing the show as "about a subtle as a slap in the face." He did, however, note Crystle Stewart's performance as Mallory Bellarie. One performance cannot fix a script that misses the mark.
How it did with audiences
Netflix’s fourth-most-watched series at launch, it pulled in 5.6 million views in its first four days. The numbers climbed to 8.7 million the following week, pushing it to the top of the streamer’s TV chart for October 28 to November 3. On TMDB, users rate it 8.5 out of 10. Viewers clearly found the specific shade of black interesting enough to keep watching.
