Batman & Robin (1997)

Strength now. Courage always. Family, above all. Batman and Robin!

Batman and his sidekick Robin attempt to the foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze, who wants to make Gotham City into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy, a botanical femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contend with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl, joins the ranks of the city's crime-fighters.

What kind of watch this is

Joel Schumacher directs this 1997 action sci-fi adventure, and the tone is set before the first punch is thrown. It is 125 minutes of neon-soaked heroics where the sidekick gets equal billing, a strange but committed choice. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Mr. Freeze, a villain whose tragic backstory is wrapped in latex and a freeze ray. He wants to turn Gotham into an arctic region, a goal that is both ecologically absurd and visually loud. George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell form the Dynamic Duo, their dynamic defined by spandex and synchronicity. The film treats its own campiness as a feature, not a bug, leaning into the absurdity of the premise until it becomes its own kind of truth.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 11%, with an average rating of 3.8 out of 10. Metacritic, less forgiving, lands on 29 out of 100. The consensus is that the film is too jokey to care much for. Roger Ebert found it "wonderful to look at" but lacking anything authentic at its core. Gene Siskel, who liked the earlier films, called this one a "sniggering, exhausting, overproduced extravaganza".

How it did with audiences

The $125 million budget bought a $238 million worldwide return, which in blockbuster math counts as a stumble. North America took in $107 million, a figure that quickly lost steam after a 63% drop in its second weekend. On TMDB, users rate it 4.4 out of 10. The audience did the arithmetic, found the math unsound, and packed their bags.

What came next for the cast

George Clooney had ER and From Dusk Till Dawn behind him. Ahead lay Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Gravity. Chris O'Donnell came from Batman Forever and Scent of a Woman, then headed toward Grey's Anatomy, Max Payne, and NCIS: Los Angeles. Arnold Schwarzenegger was fresh off Terminator 2, looking back at The Terminator, before returning for Terminator 3, Terminator Genisys, and The Expendables 2. Uma Thurman arrived from Pulp Fiction and Dangerous Liaisons, bound for Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, and Percy Jackson. The credits do not prove this film caused that trajectory. They merely mark where the path bent.

Where it left its mark

The film’s reputation is singular. Critics and creators alike treat it as a cautionary tale, often citing it as one of the worst superhero movies ever made. Joel Schumacher told Vice he was “scum,” claiming full responsibility for the disaster. He said he felt like he had “murdered a baby” when the backlash hit. Akiva Goldsman swore nobody intended it to be bad, noting the script was originally darker. George Clooney has apologized repeatedly, telling Howard Stern in 2020 that he was “bad in it” and the screenplay was terrible. He added that watching it is physically painful. The franchise suffered. The team admitted they whiffed.
