What kind of watch this is
Greta Gerwig directs a 2023 fantasy comedy that asks what happens when a plastic icon steps onto real pavement. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling navigate a world where perfection is the norm, until they crash into the messy reality of human existence. The film runs 114 minutes. The tagline says she is everything. He is just Ken.
What the critics said
Critics leaned toward praise, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 88% positive score from 506 reviews as of January 2026. Metacritic places it at 80 out of 100, a mark it labels generally favorable. The consensus highlights a visually dazzling comedy where meta humor meets subversive storytelling. Richard Brody of The New Yorker found it "brilliant, beautiful and fun as hell," while Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian saw a "giant two-hour commercial" wrapped in pink. The divide is less about quality than about what the film owes to its corporate roots.
How it did with audiences
Barbie cost $145 million and took $1.3 billion worldwide, a figure Warner Bros. celebrated as "reaching a Barbillion." It broke the record for the highest-grossing live-action comedy, beating Home Alone and The Hangover Part II simultaneously. Deadline calculated its net profit at $421 million, ranking it second among 2023's most valuable blockbusters. On TMDB, users rate it 6.9 out of 10. Audiences likely checked the math before the studio did.
