Back to the Future Part III (1990)

They've saved the best trip for last... But this time they may have gone too far.

The final installment finds Marty digging the trusty DeLorean out of a mineshaft and looking for Doc in the Wild West of 1885. But when their time machine breaks down, the travelers are stranded in a land of spurs. More problems arise when Doc falls for pretty schoolteacher Clara Clayton, and Marty tangles with Buford Tannen.

What kind of watch this is

Back to the Future Part III is a 1990 adventure comedy where the DeLorean gets stuck in the 1885 Wild West. Robert Zemeckis directs Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as they navigate a landscape of spurs. The machine breaks, leaving them stranded. Mary Steenburgen plays Clara Clayton, a schoolteacher who complicates Doc’s life. Marty clashes with Buford Tannen. It runs 119 minutes. It feels like a road trip that forgot to pack a map.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports an 81% Tomatometer score as of October 2024, alongside a 6.7 average rating from April 2022. Metacritic lands on 55 out of 100, a number that usually means "fine, but don't expect fireworks." The consensus calls it a satisfying close, which is a polite way of saying it is safer than it is bold.

Kim Newman of Empire found it restored the heart of the first film. Vincent Canby of The New York Times disagreed, calling it "almost instantly forgettable." That is a harsh verdict for a movie that just wants to wrap things up neatly.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $40 million. It took in $88 million in the United States and $245 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin for a sequel to a beloved classic, especially when the first weekend pulled $23 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. The numbers suggest people liked their time travel, even if the physics were a bit loose.

What came next for the cast

Michael J. Fox moved from the first two films into Mars Attacks! and later Designated Survivor. Christopher Lloyd moved from the first two films into The Addams Family and Nobody. Mary Steenburgen moved from her previous roles into Philadelphia. Thomas F. Wilson moved from the first two films into Ghost Whisperer. The credits list what happened next, but they do not prove the film caused any of it. That is a leap the paper trail cannot make.
