What kind of watch this is
Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 science fiction adventure that swaps the past for the future. Marty and Doc jump ahead to 2015 to fix a family mess, but Biff Tannen and a sports almanac turn the tidy plan into a chaotic mess. The film runs 108 minutes and sends Marty back to 1955 to meet his teenage parents, a loop that feels familiar but lands with fresh energy. It is a film that treats its own mythology with playful seriousness, turning a simple time jump into a complex puzzle of cause and effect. It is best enjoyed by someone who already knows how the first one ends.
What the critics said
The reviews land in a specific kind of mediocrity. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 63% as of 2022, while Metacritic settles on 57 out of 100 as of 2024. That is "mixed or average," which is polite code for "it tries too hard." Roger Ebert found the "zaniness" charming, even if the film lacked the original's power. Not everyone was amused. Jonathan Rosenbaum saw "rampant misogyny" in the plot.
