What kind of watch this is

Gary Trousdale directed this 2001 animated adventure, which runs 95 minutes. It pairs the quiet, bookish Milo with the rugged, no-nonsense Rourke. That contrast drives the film. One wants to read about the lost continent; the other wants to conquer it. The tension between those two impulses is the real hook. It is a story about finding a place that may not want to be found.

What the critics said

The reception is mixed, which is a polite way of saying nobody quite knows what to do with it. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 48% as of January 2026, while Metacritic lands on 52. Roger Ebert called the climax "one of the great animated action sequences," a specific praise that anchors the film's reputation. Owen Gleiberman, however, saw only "craft without dream." The story struggles under the weight of its own ambition, even if the visuals hold up.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $90 million. The film took in $84 million in the United States and $186 million worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 6.9/10 weighted average as of February 2026. Disney president Thomas Schumacher admitted they "missed" by avoiding a sweet fairy tale. The studio’s last hand-drawn epic didn’t quite pay its way back.

What came next for the cast

Michael J. Fox traded time travel for procedural drama, landing roles in Designated Survivor and The Good Wife. James Garner moved from Maverick to The Notebook. Claudia Christian swapped Babylon 5 for Half Past Dead. The timeline suggests a pivot, not a direct line. Credits list what followed, not why it followed.

Where it left its mark

Disney marked the 20th anniversary of the film on June 15, 2021, with a tweet celebrating Milo Thatch’s journey. The studio also released a limited commemorative pin for the occasion. Fans organized a 5-hour YouTube livestream featuring cast and crew, an event planned a year in advance. The group reunited for another stream the following year on The Tammy Tuckey Show.
