The film trades dry wit for practical effects, betting that you will forgive the soap opera plot because the underwater sets look genuinely wet. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 65% positive rate as of March 2023, alongside a 6/10 average rating from April 2022. Metacritic sits at 55 out of 100 as of June 2025, which it labels mixed or average. The scores land in the middle of the road, a common resting place for big-budget spectacle. Peter Debruge of Variety noted the film "suddenly kicks the movie up a level for the finale." Others were less impressed with the prose. Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly graded it a C−, arguing it "can't decide if it wants to be silly or serious.
