What kind of watch this is
Will Gluck directs this 103-minute rom-com, which takes a standard premise and sets it against the Australian landscape. Club’s Drew Gillis called it "fun escapism." The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee was less kind, comparing the leads to dolls forced to kiss.
How it did with audiences
It cost $25 million and made $220 million worldwide, a gap that Deadline Hollywood calculated as a $103 million net profit. The math is simple enough, though the studio probably preferred not to do it in public. As of 2024, it stands as the highest-grossing live-action Shakespeare film adaptation. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. Audiences watched enough to establish a record, which is a dry way to say they liked it.
What came next for the cast
Sydney Sweeney had already appeared in Euphoria and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood before this. Afterward, she starred in Immaculate, Madame Web, and The Housemaid. Glen Powell’s resume was longer, featuring The Dark Knight Rises and Top Gun: Maverick. He then moved into Hit Man, Twisters, and The Running Man. The credits do not claim this film changed their trajectories. They just mark the point where the lists diverged.
