It focuses less on the thrill of the kill and more on the inability to stop hearing the silence of the zone. The tension comes from a man who cannot switch off his instincts, even when he is home. It is a heavy watch.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 71% as of January 2026, which is solid but not saintly. The average user rating lags behind at 6.9/10. Metacritic lands on 73, a score it files under generally favorable. Critics mostly agreed the film worked, though they disagreed on how. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called it "a taut, vivid and sad account." Justin Chang of Variety saw "an excellent performance" that offers blunt insights into the toll of war. Not everyone bought the premise. Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly docked it a C+ for relying on one-dimensional targets. That is a harsh verdict for a film that tried so hard to be humane.
How it did with audiences
It cost $59 million and pulled in $547 million worldwide, a spread that accounts for a very solid quarter in Hollywood. Deadline Hollywood estimated a $243 million profit, placing it as the second-most profitable film of 2014, right behind Transformers: Age of Extinction. That sum also cements its status as the highest-grossing war film of all time, a title it snatched from Saving Private Ryan. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The audience clearly did the math before the studio did.
