What kind of watch this is

American Pie is a 1999 comedy about four high schoolers who enter a pact to all "score" by their senior prom. Directed by Paul Weitz, it runs 95 minutes and treats the quest with the earnest panic of a deadline that will actually happen. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, and Thomas Ian Nicholas anchor the pact, turning awkward crushes into a shared mission. The film leans into the cringe of first experiences without mocking the characters for feeling them. It is a specific kind of awkward, where the goal feels urgent because the alternative is growing up.

What the critics said

Critics treated the film like a complicated meal. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 62% approval rating and a 5.8/10 average as of August 2024. Metacritic sits at 58 out of 100, labeling the reception "mixed or average." Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, finding it "cheerful and hard-working" rather than inspired. He appreciated that the characters remained sweet despite the filth.

Not everyone shared that warmth. Kevin Maher of Sight & Sound argued the film only offers "genuine wit and sparkle" in the presence of the female characters. Stephen Holden of The New York Times called it the shallowest and most prurient teen movie of the year. The gross-out humor divided opinion, with some seeing a genre update and others a rehash of 1980s tropes.

How it did with audiences

American Pie earned $236 million worldwide, landing it as the 12th-highest-grossing film of 1999. It opened at number one, beating out Wild Wild West, before slipping behind Eyes Wide Shut. The film held the top spot in Germany for four weeks. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. IMDb users gave it a 7.0/10 weighted average as of February 2026. It was a solid hit, though perhaps not the cultural earthquake some remember.
