What kind of watch this is
American Horror Story is a 13-season anthology that treats the horror genre like a buffet. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk change the location each time: a haunted house, an asylum, a witch coven, or a summer camp. The cast shifts to fit the new nightmare, though Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters keep showing up to play different people in different hells. It runs 43 minutes per episode, totaling 104 hours of commitment. That is a lot of sleep you will have to sacrifice. The tagline calls it the nightmare of your dreams. It is less a story and more a series of elaborate traps where the audience is the bait.
What the critics said
The first season, Murder House, drew generally positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reported 72% of 147 critics gave it a positive review, while Metacritic scored it 62 out of 100. Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly called the pilot "pretty much all scare, all the time." Not everyone agreed. Alan Sepinwall of HitFix gave it a D−, arguing it was so over the top that the top was a microscopic speck in its rearview mirror. The second season, Asylum, fared better. Rotten Tomatoes reported 84% of 220 critics gave it a positive review, and Metacritic gave it 65 out of 100. James Poniewozik of Time noted it feels like a more focused, if equally frenetic, screamfest.
How it did with audiences
TMDB users rate it 8.1 out of 10. The pilot drew 3.2 million viewers, a record for FX at the time. By the finale, that number held steady at 3.22 million, with the 18–49 demographic share ticking up to 1.7. Season 2 peaked higher, pulling in 3.85 million for its premiere, though it dipped to 1.89 million by episode 6 before climbing back to 2.29 million for the finale. Season 5’s premiere became the second-most-watched telecast in the network’s history, trailing only the previous season’s 6.13 million. Strong numbers, even if the title is doing the heavy lifting.
What came next for the cast
Before 2011, Evan Peters starred in Kick-Ass and Sarah Paulson in Serenity. Denis O'Hare had Changeling under his belt, while Kathy Bates was known for Titanic. The credits cannot say the show caused what followed. They can only list the next steps. Peters moved into the X-Men franchise. Paulson joined 12 Years a Slave. O'Hare appeared in Dallas Buyers Club. Bates took roles in Richard Jewell and The Highwaymen. It is a diverse set of trajectories. Some ran parallel, some diverged.
