What kind of watch this is
Ridley Scott directs a 157-minute crime drama that splits the screen between two men who want the same thing: the other man in jail. Denzel Washington plays Frank Lucas, who smuggled heroin on planes returning from Vietnam, while Russell Crowe plays the detective determined to stop him. The film leans on the tension of those two performances rather than fast-paced action. It is a long, deliberate look at how power works in the shadows, best suited for those who prefer their crime stories to breathe.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed, though rarely with identical enthusiasm. Rotten Tomatoes reports 81% positive reviews, while Metacritic lands on 76. Roger Ebert called it an "engrossing story," and Paul Byrnes saw "grand themes" in its cast. Not everyone was so charmed. Jonathan Crocker argued the film’s aesthetics couldn't touch its predecessors, a critique that feels less like a review and more like a list of homework.
How it did with audiences
It took in $266 million worldwide, a figure that suggests audiences were less interested in accounting ledgers and more in watching a man rebuild his empire from scratch. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. IMDb scores it 7.8/10 as of March 2026.
What came next for the cast
Russell Crowe traded drama for blockbusters, a pivot that defies simple narrative. Josh Brolin went from a 1985 cult classic to the Avengers, a leap that looks less like a career arc and more like a jump cut. Denzel Washington continued his steady march through roles, ignoring the need for reinvention. These trajectories share no single causal thread. They simply happened, in different directions, at different speeds.
