It runs 18 hours across 3 seasons, a long way to go just to figure out if the rules make sense. The tone is lean and unforgiving, stripping away the neon glitz of the setting to expose the cold mechanics underneath. Kento Yamazaki plays Arisu, a guy who understands systems better than people, which is exactly why he ends up here. The hook is simple: survive the game, or stop existing. It is not a warm show, but it is a sharp one.
What the critics said
Critics largely approved, praising the cinematography and the performances of Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya. They noted the show skips exposition to get straight to the action. James Hadfield of The Japan Times found few characters left much impression, though he liked the smirking loner. Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut appreciated that it just gets straight to it. The first season holds an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 10 reviews. The second season sits at 91% based on 9 reviews. Some found the story development lacking, particularly in the second half. It is a series that trades character depth for momentum, which works if you like your games to start before you understand the rules.

What came next for the cast
Tao Tsuchiya and Nijiro Murakami arrived at Alice in Borderland with a shared history, both having starred in the Rurouni Kenshin franchise years earlier. Tsuchiya’s credits show a steady, almost monotonous dedication to that one character, appearing in the 2014 films and returning for the 2021 finale. Murakami’s path was different, moving from As the Gods Will in 2014 to The Beginning in 2021. The timeline is tight, but the data cannot prove this series changed their trajectories. It just shows where they were standing when the cameras started rolling.
